Lionel Messi struck with bottle after goal assist against valencia

Lionel Messi was struck on the head by a bottle as the Barcelona players celebrated Sergio Busquets’ stoppage-time winning goal against Valencia on Sunday night.

The Argentine star had played a part in creating the goal after his cross had found Neymar, whose header was saved before Busquets lashed home the rebound to seal a 1-0 win in the 94th minute.

Varela: Messi not half as good as Ronaldo

Carlos Varela says Lionel Messi is not half as good as Cristiano Ronaldo and claims that the Portuguese would have won more Ballon d'Or awards if he were "ugly".
Ronaldo is the reigning titleholder and the current favourite to win this year's prize after inspiring Real Madrid to Champions League glory in May.
The 29-year-old has also been widely lauded for his remarkable goalscoring exploits this season but Varela says that Ronaldo still does not get all of the credit he deserves, something he puts down to jealousy.
"I do not understand how anyone could criticise him," the former Basel midfielder told AS ahead of Madrid's Champions League clash with the Swiss champions at St. Jakob Park on Wednesday night. "I think his image has a [negative] effect.
"People are jealous and envious of him. If he were ugly, they would have treated him better.
"He should have won more than two Ballon d'Or awards. Messi is not even half the player that Ronaldo is.
"Messi has not shown the world what he can do another club, unlike Ronaldo, who has already proven himself at Manchester United."
Ronaldo won the Champions League with United in 2008 before leaving for Madrid the following year.
The Madeira native has since scored 277 goals in 264 games for the Blancos but he is continually compared to four-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi, who became La Liga and the Champions League's all-time record goalscorer over the past four days.

Sergio Agüero: deadlier than even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

Three goals against 10-man Bayern Munich and suddenly Sergio Agüero is being hailed as the new Diego Maradona or being given a leg up to the pedestal of contemporary legends occupied for so long by just Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Is Manchester City’s striker really that good? As a striker, he quite possibly is, as his hat-trick against Bayern demonstrated. For while it was true that the Germans had nothing riding on the result, and had gone down to 10 men before half-time, the context of the game was everything. City were being outplayed. They needed to win, or felt they needed to win, and Agüero was the player, the only player, who made that possible.
He had three chances on the night, and took them all ruthlessly. The first one might have been a penalty, but Agüero’s pace, strength and eye for a chance had put him into a position to score, which was why Mehdi Benatia was correctly shown a red card for bringing him down.
By the end, the whole ground was in no doubt that he would score when the final chance came his way. The bigger the occasion, the more crucial the result, the more the game seems to be slipping inexorably away without some sort of superhuman intervention, the more likely it appears that Agüero will step up to provide it.
“This year Sergio has been unbelievable,” his team-mate Samir Nasri said. “He was the same last year but then he got his injury. This year he is fitter. When he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper you don’t see him miss the target.
“Ronaldo may be on another planet, but for me Sergio is up there with Messi and [Luis] Suárez. He always delivers in a difficult moment. I don’t think I need to speak about his performances because the stats speak for themselves. He’s a great player. When he’s on his day he’s unstoppable, and we needed him to be that against Bayern.”
The stats also indicate that Agüero might be City’s most valuable player. Yaya Touré is generally considered the heartbeat of the team but there appears to be a direct correlation between Agüero scoring and City succeeding. Agüero has scored five of City’s seven Champions League goals this season and 17, almost half, of their 38 in all competitions.
Furthermore, every time Agüero has scored in a game this season City have either won (seven) or drawn (four). Of the seven games when Agüero has played but failed to score, City have lost five, won one and drawn the other.
Of the three strikers on duty at the Etihad this season Agüero has played more games and more minutes than Edin Dzeko or Stevan Jovetic and therefore scored more goals, though his total of 17 so far is more than the other two put together.
Agüero has produced more shots on target (38) than either Dzeko (eight) or Jovetic (nine), and on average he has scored a goal every 74.8 minutes, which compares very favourably with Dzeko’s 243.8 and Jovetic’s 222.3. Just over 30% of Agüero’s shots end up in the back of the net, whereas the other two can boast only 14.8% and 12.5%, although you do not really need Opta statistics to tell you that the Argentinian is lethal in front of goal.
Some of Agüero’s shots are speculative, he misses from time to time like any other human, but if you need a goal to save your life and he has only the goalkeeper to beat then there cannot be many surer bets in world football.
It was Manuel Pellegrini who first suggested that his player had the potential this season to establish himself alongside Messi and Ronaldo at the pinnacle of world football, though the City manager appeared to be backtracking slightly when he said after the Bayern game that Agüero might simply be the best striker in the world. There is a subtle difference.
Ronaldo and Messi are both players who can not only make goals, they can alter the course of a game by doing things other than scoring.

Ronaldo can make lightning charges from the halfway line, for example, occupying the larger part of a defence to leave room for someone else to score. He can also test defences with shots on goal from set pieces, often leading to a tap-in goal for a team-mate after a half-save or a block on the line. In addition to his own reliable finishing, Messi can contribute the mazy dribbles that take out defenders, the unexpected pass into space or the route into the area that did not occur to anyone else.
Agüero is not quite such a complete player, his forte is scoring goals, but as a pure striker there are few better. His main competition in England at the moment might be Diego Costa, in Europe Luis Suárez, although the latter is really out on his own as an individual, both a deadly finisher, clever schemer and brilliant improviser.
But neither Costa nor Suárez is as physically strong as Agüero, as athletically muscular, as hard to knock off the ball. Unstoppable is exactly the right word, for though it is no secret what Agüero will try to do to defences, preventing him doing it can be near to impossible. He definitely deserves to be rated in the company of Costa and Suárez, but catching up with Messi and Ronaldo might take a little more time.
Not least because both of those players (and indeed the other two) take Champions League football and vying for domestic honours for granted. Manchester City are not quite at that stage yet. They are improving, thanks in no small part to Agüero, but if it is true that the biggest games bring out the very best in the biggest players, City will not figure in as many of them unless the rest of the squad can find a way to match their leading scorer’s standard.
That can be the only explanation for Agüero’s absence from the 40-man shortlist Uefa has just announced for team of the year. There are nowhere near 40 better players than Agüero in Europe, and there might not be any deadlier strikers.

Ronaldo playing for Barcelona absurd - JohanCruyff

Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff has laughed off suggestions the Catalans could try to sign Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo at some stage in the future.

A number of reports have claimed the Portugal international could be on his way to the Camp Nou side after ex-president Joan Laporta met with his agent Jorge Mendes earlier this month.

Laporta is expected to contest the next Barca presidential election and it had been suggested he met with Mendes to discuss a potential move for Ronaldo if he were to be elected club president again.

Nevertheless, Cruyff - a close ally of Laporta - has stressed that Ronaldo will never wear the Barcelona jersey.

"It is an absurdity to think Cristiano Ronaldo could play for Barcelona," the Dutchman told Cadena Cope.

Cruyff then went on to discuss the situation of Lionel Messi at Camp Nou and stressed that the Argentine would never leave the club for financial reasons.

The prolific attacker recently suggested that he is unhappy with life at Barca and Cruyff feels there might be some internal issues at the club.

"Of course, there will be a number of teams willing to pay €200 million for Messi, but I don't think he will leave for the money.

"Messi's problem with Barcelona is something that's happened within the club. Internally things can happen that neither of us know of. I think Messi's problem is internal."

The 27-year-old has a contract with Barcelona until June 2018.

European Team of the Week: Perfect Lionel Messi, two-goal Cristiano Ronaldo drop out

Due to Lionel Messi's perfomance and hatrick inBarcelona last league match at home to Sevilla which ended on a 5-1,READ MORE STORY AFTER CUT
Lionel Messi seized the all-time goalscoring record in Spain with a hat-trick against Sevilla – his 251st, 252nd and 253rd goals of his Liga career – to guarantee his place in the latest European Team of the Week. Not bad for a bloke who turned 27 in July.
Opta graded Messi’s performance as flawless following his treble, 100 per cent shooting accuracy and healthy haul of nine touches in the opposition box on Saturday.
But Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted twice in Real Madrid’s 4-0 win at Eibar, misses out despite becoming the first player in reach 20 Liga goals in the first 12 matches.
Messi is joined in the team by Barcelona team-mates Neymar – who collected a goal and two assists – and Dani Alves, who made a mammoth 58 successful passes in the opposition half.
The much-derided Yaya Toure earns a spot in midfield following his match-winning exploits against Swansea. He’s joined by Juventus’ Paul Pogba in the holding roles.

Gibraltar: Wycombe Wanderers' Reece Styche among call ups

The 24-year-old ex-plumber, who made his Football League debut last month, is one of six British-based players to be called up for March's fixtures.

Danny Higginbotham, who retired from club football last month, is included.

Will Britt (Southampton), Scott Wiseman (Preston), David Artell (Wrexham) and Adam Priestley (Farsley) are involved.

Former Stoke and Southampton player Higginbotham, 35, stopped playing club football in January, but has agreed to play in these friendlies.

Meanwhile, Styche - on-loan at Wycombe from Forest Green - qualifies through his grandmother and will miss the Chairboys' trip to Southend on 1 March as a result of his call-up.

Upon hearing the news, he said on Twitter:  "Buzzing about the news!!! Call up to @FootballGib. 2014 has started brilliantly."

Gibraltar drew 0-0 with Slovakia in their first Uefa match in November.

Bartomeu to face Neymar complaint

New Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu faces a tough start to his tenure after it emerged he will also be cited in the complaint regarding an alleged misappropriation of funds in the transfer of Neymar from Santos last year.

Sandro Rosell resigned on Thursday, just one day after a Spanish judge revealed that the investigation into the controversial transfer will continue in court, and Bartomeu immediately vowed to fight the allegations.

The new president, who will hold the role until club elections are held in 2016, told reporters: "We are going to be very strict in the defence of our club against all the judicial and sporting authorities."

However, socio Jordi Cases will now extend the complaint to include both Bartomeu and Barca's economic vice-president Javier Faus, his lawyer revealed on Thursday night.

"We never thought it would come to this," Felipe Izquierdo told Catalan station 8TV. "We thought Barca would react, that they would call Mr. Cases and show him the numbers.

"But Sandro [Rosell] didn't tell the truth - and not just once, twice or three times. [Now] we will extend the complaint to [include] Bartomeu and Faus."

Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova win in Australian Open

Sharapova (Rus) [3] beat Cornet (Fra) [25] 6-1 7-6

Sharapova, who took nearly three-and-a-half hours to beat Karin Knapp in 40C heat on Thursday, seemed set for a stroll in the considerably cooler (22C) Melbourne Park after dismantling Cornet in the first set.
Maria Sharapova
But the pitch of her shrieks intensified as she struggled to find her rhythm and her serve in the second.
Cornet, the 25th seed, broke to lead 3-1 but the Russian broke straight back and had match point at 5-3 before Cornet broke for 5-5 and then 6-6 to set up a tiebreak.
Sharapova had several aborted ball tosses and served six double faults in the second set, notably when Cornet levelled at 5-5, with only 52% of first serves going in. The 26-year-old's groundstrokes kept her in the match, and 29 minutes after her first match point she manufactured a second to clinch the tiebreak.
The four-time Grand Slam champion won in one hour and 51 minutes to set up a clash with 20th seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova.
"She started playing better when I gave her some chances," said Sharapova. "After my last match I'm just glad to be through and have another day to recover.
"I definitely need to step it up - every player will need to raise their game."

Federer (Swi) [6] beat Gabashvili (Rus) 6-2 6-2 6-3

Switzerland's 17-time Grand Slam champion advanced to the fourth round for the 13th consecutive year with a comprehensive win over Gabashvili.
If omen's are your thing, the only other time the pair met - at Wimbledon in 2007 - Federer also won in straight sets and went on to clinch the tournament. Also, the last time wife Mirka was pregnant - she is expecting the couple's third child - Federer won the French Open and Wimbledon that year (2009).
"I'm happy that from my side I'm winning my matches in straight sets.," said Federer. "It's been different conditions every match: the heat first and the indoor match and now normal conditions today with a bit of wind.
"So it's just good to get through and get a good feel out there and make sure if you've got a chance to win your matches easier to do so."

Ballon d'Or 2013: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery's 2013 performance compared

If Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi weren't so excellent at football, you'd be tempted to call the Ballon d'Or award boring.

The pair's domination of the sport in recent years has turned the race for Fifa's golden ball into a straight shoot-out, which has been won by Lionel Messi for the past three years.

This year Ronaldo is the overwhelming favourite, but in Franck Ribéry the game's two leading lights have their most worthy competitor for many years.

The usually ever-present Lionel Messi suffered a couple of rare injuries this year, limiting his minutes and appearances. Forty-five games is still a laudable total, but well behind Ribéry's 52, which featured runs to the final of the Champions League and German Cup as well as appearances in the European Super and Club World Cups. His five trophies give him a clear edge, but while Ronaldo ended the year without silverware his triumphant performance to secure World Cup qualification for Portugal in a play-off against Sweden. Just 14 defeats out of 153 combined games illustrate the collective might of all three on the shortlist.

The goals scored figures continue to astound for both La Liga players. Messi's 42 is an outrageous return of just less than a goal per game, but even that is eclipsed by Ronaldo's absurd 66 goals from 56 appearances. But Ronaldo's goal tally came from a total of 396 shots. Messi scored 14 fewer but did so from only 146 attempts on goal, which were more than 5 per cent more accurate than his rival. Ribéry, a player whose main strengths are in other areas, trails both by a significant margin with a still-creditable 22 goals, but he does bost more accurate shooting than the two that play in Spain.

The purist's choice for the award could be Franck Ribéry, who has contributed three more assists for Bayern Munich than either of his rivals for the prize. His chance creation stats also stand out, as does his pass completion rate despite passing far more times than either Messi or Ronaldo. The latter plays in a more direct system than Barcelona or Bayern's, so his lower total pass count does not surprise, but a failure to complete more than 20 per cent of his passes does not reflect too kindly on the Portuguese.

While Ribéry tends to play wide on the left for Bayern Munich, it is something of a surprise to learn that he attempted almost four times as many dribbles as Messi and Ronaldo in 2013. The Frenchman also engages with opposition players more frequently, taking part in 943 one-on-one battles for the ball compared to Ronaldo's 709 and Messi's 579. Ribéry's more frequent forays with the ball

As more advanced players, Messi and Ronaldo predictably contribute less to their teams defensive efforts than Ribéry, but Ronaldo cleared the ball 38 times in 2013, presumably due to often being stationed in crucial areas when Real Madrid were defending corners. Ronaldo has also fouled more than his competitors for the award, and was the only player of the three to receive a red card in 2013.

What have we learned? That we are living in an era of exceptional football. Franck Ribéry, thought of as an in a distant second tier of the best footballers compared to Messi and Ronaldo, won five trophies and contributed a combined total of 30 goals and assists in 2013.
